I was nominated for a SSMart award run by the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre this year as ‘Innovative Educator of the Year’. Due to my podcasting of my lectures, popularizing science using the web etc etc. So that was cool… Apparently, I won. I could not make it to the awards, but I asked the university president, Dr. Celia Ross to accept on my behalf if I won.

I was following on twitter and on the liveblog of the event as you can see below.

Celia read this little speech for me, thanks Celia

“I wish I could be there, but I am off to Podcasters Across Borders 2010 in Ottawa to moderate a panel. I would like to thank Algoma University for being a great place to work, and for their encouragement for my teaching and research. Universities are great, you can try new things, and while I may be one of the first profs ever to podcast their lectures (man that sounds pretentious…) I am first and foremost a faculty member at Algoma, which I am very proud of.

Thanks to the Innovation Centre people for picking me of course and for this event. Cool stuff is happening in Sault Ste. Marie and dare I say, especially at Algoma University.

I would like to thank my colleagues in the psychology department (Cheryl Reed-Elder, Laurie Bloomfield, Paul Dupuis and Dwayne Keough), Marc Pelletier and Tom Merritt of TWiT.tv, my buddies Ken Hernden and Robin Isard who I do one of my podcasts with and all of the people that download my lectures on iTunes.

Finally, on a purely personal note, thanks to my wife Isabelle and our kids, Jon and Maddie for putting up with my obsession with technology and frankly for putting up with me. This year my brother won a Juno award for recording engineer of the year, and now I have an award too. So there Dan. Our Dad Rick and Mom Leslie inspired us both, so my final thanks are to my parents.”
