Psychology 1106 (Spring 07) – Learning

Spit and twitches…

Note, this is a repost of last summer’s learning lecture, my battery in my recorder died during the lecture.  The recording was originally done with my iPod and an iTalk, which does not have the same audio recording quality, sorry about that.

  1. You mentioned a sleep-inducing book by Skinner–in PoliSci, one of the most important political philosophers of the 20th century was John Rawls. His seminal work is A Theory of Justice, and to do any graduate work in that field you have to read the book, and it’s just a wonderful substitute for sleeping pills; I mentioned this (unoriginal) observation to the prof teaching the relevant course, and he told me he once had an opportunity to listen to a speech by Rawls, and about 30 minutes in he found himself literally crying from boredom. THAT is dull.

The discussion of the effects of violent video games reminded me of an early episode of ST-TNG, where Riker accompanied Worf on a holo-workout where Worf would fight those monsters, and at the end Worf turned on Riker–but as soon as Riker barked some orders at him, he stopped. Short-term effect!

  2. There is always a possible Star Trek reference…..

Ferrster and Skinner as well as Povlov, are way boring. Great science, especially Pavlov, but boring as hell.
