Well, no genetic relationship–that would explain why a Borg rebellion was possible. (Always assuming that all baby Borg were assimilated.)
I always figured they took advantage of the close proximity and dependence to fight off the urge to be selfish, so play the mechanisms off against themselves. I think too much about stuff like that….
