Re: The difficulty of thinking in non-language–is there any data on whether different languages produce thinking differences large enough to matter? (I.e., does the particular language affect how people think?)
(You will note, I am not mentioning the Star Trek reference.) Yay, Flintstones!
As intuitive a notion as that is, no. Cultures have been found that, for example, have no number system, using ‘none, one and many’ and they can still figure out which pile has more stuff. Other cultures without names for colours have been found, and people still know when things have different colours.
I just love the ‘stones. That Barney Rubble, what an actor.
Thanks! That is very interesting. Clearly language impacts what people talk and, presumably, think about; it’s fascinating that it doesn’t change the mechanisms of thought.
(I just found myself humming, and discovered that I know the whole Flintstones theme song by heart, lyrics included. The last line of which would probably be different were it written today.)
