  1. In this lecture, you spoke about the world going gray if your eyes stop moving. Sometimes expert meditators speak about the world going gray when they are in a deeply meditative state; I wonder if this might be a physical explanation for this phenomenon?

  2. NEAT!

If they can indeed stop these eye movements through sheer force of will (not my favourite expression, as there is no free will…) then this would be the explanation.

I will use that in a class this summer. Thanks so much.

  3. I would say it is more a result of training and practice than “force of will”. Meditation is HARD, and I am not very good at it, but there are some researchers who have been studying meditation and who have documented some frankly weird physical results and some interesting brain changes (http://www.hno.harvard.edu/gazette/2002/04.18/09-tummo.html ; http://www.news.harvard.edu/gazette/daily/2006/01/23-meditation.html ); it wouldn’t surprise me if someone who has control over his body temperature has control over the movements of his eyes.
