  1. Alas, we cannot leave questions of consciousness to the philosophers; as I understand it, most modern philosophers (not all, I’m sure, but most), if asked about consciousness respond along the lines of, “And just who is asking?” They don’t seem to find it an interesting question.

I know that ST-TNG episode–it’s named “Night Terrors.” Okay, I had to look up the title. But, heh!

I noticed that most of the people in my dreams are either from television or people I haven’t seen for many years, rather than people I actually deal with on a regular basis, and others I’ve talked to say they’ve noticed the same. I’m thinking it might have something to do with the fact that they are handy faces to impose stuff on, since it’s more noticeable if someone you know does something really weird.

  2. I think the best bet as far as figuring out what consciousness is and how to measure it is with Francis Crick’s group. He won the Nobel for discovering the DNA molecule, and is pretty smart. He has surrounded himself with neuroscientists and psychologists that are working on the problem.

Yeah ‘Night Terrors’. Man I could not stand Troi….

  3. The The Double Helix, Watson-and-Crick Crick? Quite a shift, from molecular biology to neuroscience. (Didn’t he pass away a few years ago? Of course, that wouldn’t necessarily break up or change the focus of his research group.)

I have no idea why The Great Bird of the Galaxy thought that bridge crew/senior staff of a starship should include a counselor (shouldn’t such a position be subordinate to the chief medical officer?) at all. In all fairness, though, her character became rather less annoying once they put her in a uniform near the end of the series…

  4. This is bizarre. I awake at 4 am and cannot get back to sleep, and I listen to this very episode. Insomnia sucks and I’m getting a little tired of it.

  5. Karen, yeah I have a lot of trouble sleeping too, it can be just horrible. Some of those tips I gave in the lecture actually work though.
