  1. I once designed and typeset a book about ancient Greece, which included a reproduction of the famous David painting of Socrates lecturing while holding the cup of hemlock in his hand. The book went out to the printer, and I took myself off to the Metropolitan Museum of Art–and discovered we had flipped the painting (right to left). No one–not the author, not the proofreader, not any of the people who signed off on the book–noticed, and now there are some 30,000 copies of that mistake floating around!
